Retirement arrives for Mr Jensen

Friday 02 August 2024

Carl Jensen is retiring after 21 years caring for women in Guernsey - some of whom have called him their "hero".

The consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist joined the Medical Specialist Group 21 years ago.

In that time he has cared for some women through multiple pregnancies and childbirths, as well as fertility treatments, problems with the bowel, bladder and urinary system, pelvic malignancy, hormone problems, and hysterectomies.

Mr Jensen said the breadth of work he's carried out during his time in Guernsey has been fulfilling.

"I have really enjoyed the last 21 years working as a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the MSG.

"It has been a great privilege living and working in Guernsey and I will miss my colleagues, both at the MSG and Health & Social Care.

"I would also particularly like to acknowledge the incredible support that I have received from my patients over the years. Guernsey has a fantastic community spirit and I am looking forward to staying connected with the community in my retirement.’

"Obstetrics is all about caring for you and your unborn child during pregnancy and childbirth, working closely with the midwifery service provided by Health & Social Care and with paediatricians.

'Gynaecology is concerned with the health and wellbeing of your reproductive organs – your uterus, ovaries, cervix and vagina. This includes fertility services, urogynaecology (problems with your bowel, bladder and urinary system), pelvic malignancy and endocrinology' - The MSG.

Mr Jensen was born and educated in South Africa, where he undertook his medical training before moving to the UK in 1991.

He moved to Guernsey in 2003 following a consultancy post at University Hospital Lewisham in 1998, bringing with him "extensive knowledge and expertise in treating and diagnosing women’s health issues and caring for women during pregnancy and childbirth", said the MSG.

Although he is retiring from his medical work, Mr Jensen plans to remain involved in island life - embracing the community spirit he himself praised in his retirement announcement.

"I plan to remain on island and take on a new role of Constable for St Pierre Du Bois parish - a challenge that I am looking forward to," he said.

"I am also a keen gardener and look forward to spending more time in my garden, on my boat and, of course, with my family."

Announcing Mr Jensen's retirement, the MSG Chair Dr Steve Evans said he will be missed by everyone among his colleagues and patients.

"We are very grateful to Carl for his many years of service to the MSG. Not only has he been a great colleague, but he has been a fantastic doctor to his patients and he will be greatly missed by everyone. We wish him all the best for his well-deserved retirement."
