Homelessness highlighted again as local charity seeks support

Tuesday 17 September 2024

Caritas is asking for urgent support from our community to combat the growth of homelessness within the island as it searches for land to build a “modular housing development”.

A report from the States of Guernsey Indicators of Poverty in April 2023 highlighted the “stark reality” of homelessness and the threat of insecure housing across the island.

Caritas Chairman, Graham Merfield, said that compelled them to act.

“Homelessness is often a hidden issue in Guernsey, but it is a reality for far too many," he said.

"The rising cost of living and stagnant wages have only exacerbated the problem, making secure housing unattainable for many.”

The report revealed that 1.8% of the population  - equivalent to more 1,000 people – lacked secure housing.

Another report from the Guernsey Community Foundation in July 2022 revealed many people are “sofa surfing” or living in “makeshift shelters” like bunkers.

Caritas is now proposing an urgent response to this with a solution aimed at building homes for those directly affected by housing insecurity.

The charity aims for the housing development, where they hope to build up to 24 homes, to be built in two phases to provide temporary accommodation for up to two years for each individual.

It will be overseen by a “dedicated” Community Leader who will help foster a smooth transition towards permanent housing solutions for each resident.

The site for the modular homes requires 1000m2 of land and an estimated £1 million to fund the build, ensuring the new community space is "a supportive and secure environment" for the residents.

“Our modular housing project is more than just a shelter; it’s about giving people a safe place to call home, a community to belong to, and a chance to rebuild their lives with dignity," said Mr Merfield.

“We are reaching out to people of Guernsey to help us raise £1 million for the first phase of our project and to identify a suitable site for the development.

“Together, we can create a lasting impact on the lives of those most in need.”
