Refill for free with Guernsey Water

Thursday 16 January 2020

Guernsey Water has announced plans to install public refill stations as part of a trial to cut down on the number of disposable water bottles thrown away.

Planning permission is needed first, but if that is approved the refill stations will be installed at Vazon and in town.

The idea has followed the introduction of the Refill scheme across the island in 2018, which saw local businesses offer tap water to people carrying their own bottles.

Guernsey Water said it has "seen the Refill revolution grow, with over 100 local businesses now signed up as Refill stations across the island".

Margaret McGuinness, Water Quality Risk Manager at Guernsey Water said it's proven really popular.

“The popularity of Refill as a scheme locally has really shown us the importance that islanders place on refilling their water bottles when they are out and about. The next logical step for us is to trial the introduction of permanent public Refill stations.”

If planning permission is granted, the two Refill stations will be installed this year near the Liberation Monument and at Vazon bay.

The Liberation Monument, near North Beach car park and the Herm Trident kiosk, is a busy area with a high pedestrian footfall. Vazon is popular with beach goers, dog walkers, events and visitors throughout the year.

“We have engaged with nearby local businesses in relation to our plans which have been met with support, we will continue to work with those nearby to ensure we are able to minimise any disruption which may occur during installation,” said Mrs McGuinness.

Guernsey Water confirmed that the investment is in line with two of the utility’s seven business outcomes, Protect our Environment and Safe and Good to Drink. The utility also advised that they view this investment in the long term best interest of islanders and the Island’s environment.
