Refill for free and cut your plastic waste further

Thursday 27 September 2018

40 different refill stations are available across Guernsey today, to encourage people to use tap water and refillable bottles instead of buying more plastic.

It is 'National Refill Day' with a ‘Refill Revolution’ planned which is being supported by Guernsey Water, Guernsey Waste and Plastic Free Guernsey.

11 year old Destiny Hollyer-Hill came up with the idea in Guernsey originally and she approached the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure to ask for States support.

The idea was taken up, with Guernsey adopting the national campaign which is "committed to stopping plastic pollution at source by making it easier to find free tap water on the go than buying a single use plastic bottle."

Spokesperson for Plastic Free Guernsey, Madeleine Norman, said the idea has been taken well with a number of businesses backing the campaign.

“So far, we have 40 refill stations in Guernsey. They are displaying posters and stickers but we are encouraging those stations to tag themselves on the new Refill App launched last week so that everyone canlocate them easily”.

Anyone using social media is also asked to use the  share this using thehashtags ‘#refillrevolution’ and ‘#refillguernsey’ to help spread the word.

Waste Minimisation and Recycling Officer for Guernsey Waste, Tina Norman-Ross said, “The Refill scheme supports Guernsey’s Waste Strategy which prioritises waste prevention andreuse. Our focus is changing behaviour and these figures show how much plastic we can use without even realising. All it takes is a small change and remembering to carry a refillablewater bottle to make a difference.’’

Margaret McGuinness, Water Quality and Risk Manager at Guernsey Water which sponsored ‘Refill Guernsey’ said, “Guernsey Water also provide temporary drinking water stations at major island events to further encourage the use of refillable bottles”.
