Possible sighting of missing man

Thursday 23 January 2020

There has been an unconfirmed sighting of missing man Matthew Bourgaize, as the search for him continues more than a week after he was last seen.

Guernsey Police say while there haven't been any confirmed sightings of him, since shortly after he left the grounds of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday 11 January, there has now been an "unconfirmed sighting" of him the following day.

The unconfirmed sighting of Mr Bourgaize was at 14:55 on Sunday 12 January, 24 hours after he walked out of the Oberlands facility where he had been having treatment.

Someone has reported seeing him on Braye Road, near Alliance. The person they saw matches the description given of what Mr Bourgaize was wearing when he was last seen - a long coat with a fluffy hood and grey joggers.

Guernsey Police are also asking for any witnesses who recall seeing a man cycling a pushbike and singing, on Grandes Maison Road, on weekdays before Christmas to contact them, by calling 725111.

It's thought officers want to rule out the man seen on Braye Road from their investigation, by confirming who was the individual on Grandes Maison Road last month.

Guernsey Police have said no one is in any trouble, they just need help to rule those individuals out of their search for Mr Bourgaize, as the investigation continues.

"Since our last update on Monday, officers have continued their efforts searching for Matthew," said Guernsey Police in a statement issued on Wednesday 22 January. "So far, there have been no further confirmed sightings.

"Officers are continuing to pursue lines of enquiry and we are looking to identify someone seen cycling and singing loudly in Grandes Maison Road between 3.30pm and 5pm on weekdays before Christmas.

"We are also looking to speak to a male seen walking along Braye Road, between Alliance and Lowlands Road on Sunday 12th January at 2.55pm, wearing a long black coat with a fluffy edged hood, grey jogging bottoms and trainers. The description closely matches that of Matthew, and we believe people are, in good faith, reporting seeing this person.

"We want to make it absolutely clear they aren’t in trouble, we just need to speak to them so we can eliminate those sightings from our investigation. We are asking them to please either call JESCC on 725111 or visit the Police Station. Their help will be invaluable."

Guernsey Police asked everyone again to look at the pictures of Mr Bourgaize which have been shared through the media and on social media, and to contact officers if anyone has any information.

"We once again are asking everyone who reads this to look at the attached picture and contact us with any information you have. Let us decide how valuable your information is, don’t keep it to yourself."
