Only three arrests but North Beach vandalised over weekend

Monday 22 June 2020

Just three people were arrested as hundreds of people descended on St Peter Port to enjoy their first night out with friends since at least March

However, the States has reported that North Beach toilets have had to be closed temporarily because of damage caused over the weekend by vandals.

As Saturday saw the Bailiwick enter Phase Five of its lockdown exit strategy, many people decided to socialise with others to celebrate the sense of freedom.

Bars in St Peter Port were said to be very busy at times, with queues to get into Guernsey's two nightclubs, which had been forced to close for three months when lockdown restrictions were brought in.

Guernsey Police said as restrictions were "virtually completely removed" it was expected that people would be in high spirits so high visibility patrols were arranged to ensure there was no trouble.

"As you would expect, we put in place an appropriate policing plan for the full resumption of the normal night-time economy. High visibility patrols were in the Town area throughout the night," said a police spokesman.

"In total, three arrests were made on Saturday night, in keeping with what we would expect for a normal weekend.

"Officers reported hundreds of people were out in Town enjoying themselves, the atmosphere was incredibly good and everyone in high spirits. Patrolling officers liaised closely with licensees, who took steps such as limiting capacity and using additional door staff, which helped manage the situation. Overall, the weekend was in line with those before lockdown."

Although there were only three arrests, there is a separate police investigation underway after damage was caused to the toilets at North Beach car park.

"Unfortunately we have a bit of news to share with you that isn’t very Guernsey Together," said a spokesperson for the States. "The gents’ public toilets at North Beach were vandalised overnight on Saturday. We’ve had to close them until temporary repairs are carried out, but we’ll get them open as soon as possible. The damage has been reported to the police and they are investigating."
