Owner makes fatal decision after dog attack

A German Shepherd has been put to sleep after it attacked a young child in what appears to have been an isolated incident.

The situation unfolded during Sunday afternoon after the family of the three year old child decided to visit Delancey Park.

While there, the child was attacked by the German Shepherd.

Guernsey Police are investigating the incident which left the three year old with injuries, but officers haven't confirmed what they are so far.

A Guernsey Police statement said:

"The child was taken to the PEH by his family, and has since been discharged from Hospital and is now at home, having suffered relatively minor injuries."

The dog was on a lead at the time of the incident, and the police statement said it "has no history of such behaviour."

However, the owner made the decision to have their pet put to sleep after the attack, and that was done yesterday too.

Guernsey Police said: 

"The dog was immediately taken by its owner to the Vets and has been put to sleep. 

"The dog was on a lead at the time, and has no history of such behaviour. The owner has taken all reasonable precautions of a dog owner and from our investigation there are no prosecutions being sought against the owner. 

"This appears to have been a very unfortunate incident, with no indication either the child or the dog owner have done anything wrong."
