Over £400,000 donated since launch of Small Grants Programme

Sunday 26 June 2022

Forty local charities and non-profit organisations (NPO) have benefitted from the Small Grants Programme since its launch last year.

The Social Investment Fund (SIF) initiative supports organisations which support Bailiwick residents. After the second round of funding earlier this year, the total donated through the scheme has exceeded £420,000.

Grants are awarded across a broad spectrum of applications. Recipients of the grants include The Astronomy Section of La Société Guernesiaise, the Alderney Bird Observatory, Guernsey Bereavement Service, and the 5th Guernsey Scouts Group.

Larger awards were distributed to Friends of Sark School, which received £20,000 towards outdoor play equipment for the school.

The Guernsey Counselling Service received £16,000 to support training and counselling costs. Action for Children’s Youth Housing Project was awarded around £15,000 to fund ‘moving in’ equipment packs for service users who leave training flats to live independently.

Applications for another round of funding are currently open for registered charities and NPOs operating within or to benefit the Bailiwick.

Funding applications for this round should be focused on people in our Bailiwick community, on the services and support they need, or be of benefit to our community.

Under the programme, organisations can also apply for a grant of up to £25,000 to put towards one-off projects or ongoing expenses of a year’s duration, such as salaries or running costs. Applications for grants in excess of £25,000 can be made to SIF’s Major Grants Programme, which will open again for applications in autumn.

The programme replaces the Christmas lottery grants, which used to be distributed by the Association of Guitar Charities. SIF now has access to all the Guernsey lottery net proceeds, which means there are more funds available for charities than in the past.

SIF Lead Officer, Sadie Siviter de Paucar said: “We are pleased to launch another round of small grants which will provide increased funding to the charity sector this year.

“Small grants are vital for funding the work of charities, enabling them to cover costs that they might otherwise struggle to pay, for small projects or supporting new initiatives.”

Applications must support specific outcomes, which include employment, education or training opportunities, protect our natural environment, challenge barriers causing disadvantage or discrimination and improving the lives of people with specific needs, disadvantages or disabilities.

Charities must complete and submit an application form online through SIF’s grant application portal by 22 July.
