Outstanding local volunteering celebrated for 15th year

Saturday 28 July 2018

People are set to have the opportunity to put charities close to their hearts and minds forward for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

The award's 15th anniversary is being celebrated this year across Britain, and is one of the country's top recognitions for voluntary organisations.

Since first awarded in 2003, 24 Bailiwick charities have received the award, including three operating exclusively in Alderney.

"The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service was launched to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen. It’s the highest award for volunteer-led organisations, which not only rewards excellence but also fosters the very best working practices throughout the third sector," the Lieutenant-Governor, Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder, said.

"It really is the gold standard of volunteering, of which any group that receives can be rightly proud."

His Excellency also paid tribute to the local charities which are nominated for the award. he said the local third sector touches the lives of so many within our communities and further that he was not surprised it had won so many of the awards: "I have no doubt there are more to come".

Sir Martin Lewis, Chairman of the national Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service Awards Committee, recently highlighted the Bailiwick’s achievements as "out of all proportion to the size of its population", and said that a "great charitable spirit runs like a golden thread" through the islands.

Since 2014, all nominations for The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service have been made directly by members of the public. Any group of two or more people doing volunteering work can be nominated for theAward. The group should have been running for at least three years, with the majority of participants being volunteers. More than half of the people involved must have the right to live in the UK or one of the Crown Dependencies.
