Data protection co-operation between Guernsey and Gibraltar has been made easier after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two jurisdictions.
The Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) has signed the MoU with the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority, establishing a new framework that’ll allow the organisations to work together better.
ODPA Commissioner, Emma Martins, said: “I am very pleased to sign this agreement on behalf of the Authority.
“It serves to cement an already strong relationship with The Gibraltar Regulatory Authority. Smaller jurisdictions like ours have much in common and we can learn from, and support, each other as we continue to strive for the highest standards of data protection for our communities.”
The agreement will help facilitate better cross-border enforcement of data protection breaches.
John Paul Rodriguez is Gibraltar’s Information Commissioner, he said: “Globalisation and technological innovation are increasingly allowing personal data to be shared more widely, with greater ease, and in larger volumes.
“Whilst this presents challenges, it does not come without its opportunities. Sharing our experiences as regulators, and leveraging off each other’s knowledge, will allow us to be more efficient, adaptable and resilient in fulfilling our functions and ultimately in protecting the rights of individuals when it comes to their personal data.”
