North beach roadworks finished, for now

Thursday 22 November 2018

The access road to North Beach car park and St Peter Port's harbour facilities has reopened - meaning any related congestion around the Weighbridge roundabout should ease off.

The resurfacing work had taken four days with engineers taking down the closed road and diversion signs this morning.

The work wasn't meant to be finished until tomorrow, but the contractors employed by Guernsey Harbours, Tarmac Services Limited, had everything finished a day ahead of schedule.

Access to the car park is now back where it normally is, with the road on St Julian's Emplacement back to being one way only, as an exit route towards the roundabout.

Guernsey’s Harbourmaster Captain David Barker said while it was good the work had been finished so quickly, he was also pleased there had been minimal disruption while the access to the North Beach car parl and Harbour had been changed.

“This has been a short but successful project," he said, "thanks to the efforts of our contractors, Tarmac Services, and of Guernsey Harbours and States Traffic and Highways Services staff who have planned and co-ordinated road traffic management during the project.

"This work was vital for maintaining access for St Peter Port harbour and North Beach car park in the years to come and we are pleased that it has caused minimal disruption, particularly during commuter rush hours. Following a pro-active public awareness campaign on our social media channels and the island’s media, we are grateful that road users helped by heeding our advice whilst the work was being done.”

While the access road to North Beach has reopened, there is a second phase of the planned work, which is due to start on Monday 26 November.

That work will see St Julian's Emplacement resurfaced, affecting port permit parking spaces on the exit road from the harbour area. Those port permit parking spaces will be suspended so the road surface can be replaced and port parking permit holders will be asked to park on the New Jetty instead whilst the work takes place for three days from Monday.
