Nominations open for The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Wednesday 09 September 2020

Islanders have the opportunity to nominate exceptional local charities for a top national award, which is the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer-led organisations.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest national recognition for voluntary organisations. A total of 25 Guernsey charities and three operating exclusively in Alderney have received the award since it was first granted in 2003 to mark The Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

Malcolm Woodhams, Chair of the Association of Guernsey Charities, urged islanders to nominate their favourite charity.

"The work undertaken by many local organisations is essential; never more so than through the difficult times this year," he said.

"It is important to recognise and celebrate the islands’ strong volunteer spirit. If you know of a local charity that you think deserves recognition then now is the time nominate them.

"It is a simple process and I would encourage islanders to show volunteers how much their work is appreciated by submitting a nomination for this prestigious award."

Guernsey’s Lieutenant-Governor, Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder, described the QVS as the gold standard of volunteering. "It’s the equivalent of the MBE and the highest award for volunteer-led organisations," he said.

"The award not only recognises excellence but also certifies that a charity follows the best working practices of the third sector. Any group that receives it can be rightly proud."

Since 2014, all nominations for The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service have been made directly by members of the public.
