New start line for Saffery Rotary walk

Wednesday 12 June 2019

If you're among the brave walkers taking on the 39-mile Saffery Walk this Saturday, 15 June, make sure you get to the correct starting point.

Previous years have seen the White Hart used as the setting off point, but this year the Guernsey Information Centre on the South Esplanade will mark the starting line.

The Information Centre will open at a bright and early 04:30. Walkers will be able to register their attendance at this point, scan their individually allocated barcoded number and begin the walk. The remainder of the walking route will remain unchanged.

An ambitious target of 1000 walkers and 50 relay teams have been set. Chair of the Walk’s organising committee, Simon Milstead, has thanked all of them, as well as the volunteers and wished the best of luck to everyone participating.

“It’s wonderful to see the community come together for this event to raise funds for 23 well-deserving charities. A reminder to all walkers to please also bring your reusable water bottle. There will be stand pipes positioned around the route to refill,” he added.

Registration will be open until midnight on Wednesday; however, walkers can also sign up on the day of the Walk at the very start of the day.

The Saffery Rotary Walk was established 21 years ago and as one of the island’s largest fundraising events, attracting hundreds of walkers each year and supporting dozens of charitable projects.

Last year saw over £60,000 raised for 20 local charities and organisations. Since its inception in 1998, the Walk has raised nearly £600,000 in total.
