New postnatal depression support available

Monday 29 April 2019

A new support service is being launched for families affected by, or experiencing, postnatal depression.

‘Beyond Blue’ is being run by the staff at Bright Beginnings Children Centre, which is based at the former St Sampson's Infants school.

The new ‘Beyond Blue’ initiative will work alongside other services already available for mums and families going through pregnancy and birth, along with "fun activities for parents and care-givers with children under 5".

“This service will provide a nurturing, safe and confidential environment that offers non-judgemental support to families and helps assist Mums and Mums-to-be on the road to recovery,” said Amy Hook, Deputy Manager, Bright Beginnings Children’s Centre,  who has been instrumental in setting up the initiative.

“The aim of the group is to make sure Mums knows they are not alone and feel supported during what can be a very isolating time – and we recognise that partners can also need help, and support is offered to them.”

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, from the Guernsey Postnatal Depression Support Group said; “We are thrilled that the team at Bright Beginnings have taken over the delivery of the work previously offered by the Guernsey Postnatal Depression Support Group – it makes sense to have these services all ‘under one roof’ and we hope that many more people in need of this vital care will benefit as a result.

“Postnatal Depression remains an illness which receives too little attention and Bright Beginnings will do a great job in continuing to raise awareness."

The service is launching today, at the start of Mental Health Awareness Week, with a fortnightly support group to follow, with a crèche available. There will also be a ‘Beyond Blue Buddies’ group which will provide one-to- one sessions, and a closed Facebook group. A referral will be needed for families to access these services which can be done via a health professional, third sector agency or self-referral.
