New Occupation book to commemorate 75th Liberation Day

Wednesday 22 July 2020

Guernsey Museums & Galleries has published a book about the Occupation of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Liberation.

‘Occupation to Liberation 1940 to 1945: Guernsey, Sark & Alderney’ was written by Jason Monaghan, who retired from GMG in 2019. It is intended as an introduction to the Occupation, and explores the varied experiences of those in each of the three Bailiwick Islands.

While almost half of islanders either evacuated to England or joined the British armed forces in 1940, a slim majority remained to experience the Occupation. Dr Monaghan’s book reflects the importance of the Occupation in the minds of islanders, and the way it frames the modern history of the Bailiwick.

The book is illustrated throughout by objects and images which are currently featured in a new display at the Guernsey Museum in Candie Gardens. These include treasured toys, a crystal radio set and bookends carved by a German soldier.

‘Occupation to Liberation 1940 to 1945: Guernsey, Sark & Alderney’ is available from Guernsey Museum and other local retailers.
