New Guernsey History Trails app announced

Sunday 05 August 2018

A new app has been launched by a local entrepreneur giving people access to a number of different Guernsey History Trails.

The first version of the app covers The Occupation in 1940 to 1945 with two separate tours.

Having been designed and built in Guernsey, the 99p app can take users on two full self guided tours of the island at the moment, and gives additional information at each stop along with historical photos to compare to today.

It was designed by Guernsey-woman Jennifer Strachan, who worked closely with both Festung Guernsey and Submarine to build it using Digimap.

"I came up with the idea after constantly meeting tourists on Clarence Battery while I walk my dog, answering their questions, and then thinking that an app would be really helpful for them to answer their own questions," she said.

"I have had amazing support from Steve Powell of Festung Guernsey to select the best sites and to ensure the app’s accuracy and from the team at Submarine who had some great ideas for building the app. I was so pleased I could do this with an all-Guernsey team.  If people like this one, we’d like to look at other trails in the future."

The two tours are a St Peter Port walking tour and an island driving tour. The former takes in many of the important locations and memorials around Town, while the latter visits bunkers, towers, museums and even the airport, exploring their roles during the Occupation.

Mr Powell, Festung Guernsey and Occupation Archive, has published several books on he and his teams' research and site restoration work, so said they were happy to get involved to reach a broader audience.

"Many do not realise that Guernsey has some of the best preserved and unique structures from World War II and hopefully this app will encourage people to learn more about it."

The Guernsey History Trails app costs 99p and is available to download from the Apple App Store for all Apple iOS devices and for Android at Google Play and will shortly be available on Amazon.
