More than 30 dangerous weapons handed into Alderney authorities

More than 30 weapons have been handed into Alderney Police after the public were given a two-week grace period to submit them.

It comes as the island’s Dangerous Weapons Ordinance was recently updated and Alderney Police continue to investigate illegally held weapons in the island.

“It was identified that there may be existing licence holders, previous licence holders or members of the public who no longer wish to keep dangerous weapons, so we decided to provide an opportunity for the community to surrender any weapons they no longer wish to keep,” said Sergeant James Taylor.

“The Weapons Surrender has been very positive with a number of licence renewals and over 30 dangerous weapons being handed in for safe disposal. These weapons are no longer available to the public and will ensure Alderney continues to be a safe place to live, work and visit.”

Among the weapons handed in were several shotguns, a decorative sword and 200 crossbow bolts.

The dangerous weapons law in Alderney differs to other jurisdictions as it also encompasses BB guns and bow and arrows.
