Model Yacht Pond closed for a month

Monday 21 January 2019

Guernsey's Model Yacht Pond is going to be closed from today until 22 February so maintenance work can be carried out.

Some general repairs are planned, which can only be done when the pool has been drained - plus there may be some work that isn't expected.

The Head of Technical & Estate Services at Guernsey's Ports, Martyn Stanfield, said he annual maintenance programme ensures the popular facility can remain open.

“This is an ideal time of year to drain the Model Yacht Pond when user demand is at its lowest point.

"Once emptied of water, Guernsey Harbours staff will be cleaning debris out of the Pond, fixing any issues with its walls, supply pipe and drainage. We have worked with the Guernsey Sailing Trust so that the repairs do not affect its teaching programme and do not clash with island school PE lessons. These repairs will help us keep the facility available for those wanting to learn sailing and boating, and for the continued use of model boats.

The Pond on the Castle Emplacement was opened in 1887 with the current structure built in 1950.
