Ministry of Justice raises Sark flag for Fief day

Saturday 06 August 2022

Today marks the 457th anniversary of Sark being granted fiefdom by the Crown.

In keeping with their yearly tradition, the Ministry of Justice is flying the Sark flag at their London headquarters to mark the occasion.

The Ministry of Justice is responsible for managing Her Majesty’s Government’s constitutional affairs with the Crown Dependencies.

Fiefdom was granted in 1565 to Helier de Carteret by Queen Elizabeth I. De Carteret established plans to permanently settle forty families on the island after French invaders were removed.

The Monarch approved the plan and signed the Charter which installed De Carteret as the island's first Seigneur on August 6, 1565.

Lord Bellamy QC, the UK’s Justice Minister, said: “We take this opportunity to celebrate our unique and historic relationship and wish a happy Fief Day to the residents of Sark."

Conseiller John Guille, Chairman of Sark’s Policy and Finance Committee, added: “Sark is pleased to note that Fief Day is a celebration of Sark islanders distinct place in the Crown Dependencies family.”
