Meeting held with Icelandic Ambassador

Wednesday 15 July 2020

Chief Minister Gavin St Pier has been in talks with the Icelandic Embassy, following his suggestion that an ‘air bridge’ could be established with the Nordic country.

In a video conference held on Monday June 13, Deputy St Pier spoke with Stefan Haukur Johannesson, Iceland’s Ambassador, to discuss the two jurisdictions’ experiences with the coronavirus.

The conversation reportedly focused on each place's exit strategy from lockdown, and how best to approach the ongoing issues of testing and the safe re-opening of borders.

Deputy St Pier said the possibility of an ‘air bridge’ was discussed, however no formal agreement was made.

“Work is continuing in Guernsey, as in other jurisdictions, to develop and manage our economic recovery strategy, and in particular to review the current border restrictions,” said Deputy St Pier.

“The global nature of the pandemic has illustrated how important it is to be able to share our learning and experiences with other jurisdictions who are facing the same difficult decisions as us.”

“I look forward to developing and strengthening our relationship with Iceland over the coming months,  and hope that we will be able to explore further the possibility of establishing an air bridge.”
