Medical cannabis at the Mallard

Thursday 09 June 2022

A medicinal cannabis clinic is set to open in the Forest, if a change of use application is granted by the States.

Medicann, which already prescribes to patients in Guernsey, is hoping that it can open its new medical practice at the Mallard Complex. The company has applied for permission to change the use of the existing rooms from ‘beautician’ to ‘health/welfare services’.

Chief Executive, Gary Whipp, said he hopes permission will be granted “in the next three to four weeks”.

“If the change of use is granted, we will be ready immediately to set up with three clinic rooms and a reception area,” he said.

Mr Whipp continued: “We will be looking into other options for the clinic in the future, however that is dependent on various other applications which are currently ongoing in the area, including housing for over-50s.

“We think that establishing a pharmacy on the site would be helpful to local residents, as well as general GP services, however we will need to wait and see. We are happy as we are for now.”

Mr Whipp confirmed that, if permission is granted, prescriptions issued in the new clinic would continue to be filled at Stonelakes Pharmacy on the Bridge.

Lovell Ozanne submitted the change of use application on behalf of Medicann and took other proposals “for the development of new and social community facilities” in the area.

The application cover letter detailed: “The Mallard Complex is a multi-use site with an underlying leisure use… there are no other sites within the Forest West Local Centre that could accommodate this particular use at this time.

“The scale of the proposal is small in comparison to the other uses within the Mallard Complex and would have no detrimental effect on the vitality of the local centre of any of the main centres.

“We believe that these proposals would benefit not only the vitality and longevity [of] the Mallard Complex but will reinforce the vitality of the Forest West Centre.”
