Local children join nation in 'Walk to School Week'

Seven primary schools in Guernsey are joining hundreds nationally by taking part in Walk to School Week from today.

The national campaign aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality around schools, promote healthiness and activeness in children and help reduce stress at the school gates.

Special resource packs have been provided to the participating schools containing classroom wall charts to plot the children’s walking activity and diaries for children aged 4-11 to record their walks. It also includes a reward for each child who takes part in the campaign.

“One of the aims of Walk to School Week is to encourage parents and children to walk at least once a week throughout the school year.  Taking part in some early morning activity such as walking or cycling means that children arrive at school more alert and ready to learn," Deputy Barry Brehaut, President of Environment & Infrastructure, said.

“Also, encouraging young people to walk more frequently at an early age helps them learn vital road safety awareness and orientation skills, which improves their confidence for when they're older.”

This year’s theme explores the ecosystem of a tree and is called the “Walking Roots Challenge”. Pupils who walk to school each day add a sticker to a classroom activity tree. Each sticker helps bring the tree to life, from the roots to the trunk and the leaves and flowers. The activity diaries will focus on the importance of nature and the environment, and the benefits of walking and active travel.

In total 40 Key Stage One and 57 Key Stage Two Guernsey classes will take part including at Vauvert Primary, pictured above and top.

Secretary of Living Streets Guernsey, Pat Wisher, said: “We fully support Walk to School Week.  The week gives children and their parents an opportunity to build exercise into their daily routine. Guernsey is looking its best in May with all the new leaves on the trees and earth banks full of wild flowers. It’s an ideal time for children to appreciate nature and do their bit for the environment.”
