“Living off the Land” bonanza at Victorian Walled Garden today

Sunday 29 April 2018

The Victorian Walled Garden is throwing a "Living off the Land" party today at Saumarez Park, with an all-day Occupation themed experience.

Waitrose is supporting the event with money raised through its Community Matters Scheme helping with catering costs and the hire of marquees. Several staff members will be volunteering on the day as well.

Starting at 10:00 and running until 16:00, the event has been inspired by the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society book and film and has taken the organisers eight months to plan. One of those organisers, Joy Liggett, a volunteer of the Guernsey Botanical Trust, said she was extremely grateful to Waitrose for its support, and is excited about the event.

Ian Burdekin, Waitrose Admiral Park Branch Manager said: ““Guernsey has a great history of growing and food production with goods exported all over the world, many of which are sold in Waitrose branches across the UK.

"A lot of these products will be showcased at this weekend’s “Living off the Land” event and I hope as many people as possible go along to learn about the island’s heritage and how those living through the war years were forced to become versatile with their cooking when ingredients were in such short supply.”

As part of the event, a competition culminated on Friday at the College of Further Education to produce the tastiest Potato Peel Pie using modern day ingredients.  The winning pies will be displayed today at the Living off the Land event.

The day will be officially opened by HE Lieutenant-Governor Vice-Admiral Sir Ian Corder and Lady Corder.  There will be live music, a fruit and vegetable themed fancy dress competition, craft displays, an animal farm, games and a variety of static displays.  Hot food will be available from 10:00.

The German Occupation Museum and the Channel Islands Occupation Society are also supporting this event and will be present on the day.
