LISTEN: “We are struggling with the legacy of previous committees”

New key worker accommodation and the completion of the Hospital Modernisation Project are the two major workstreams Deputy Al Brouard would like to see completed before he hangs up his political cap.

The President of the Committee for Health & Social Care, Deputy Al Brouard, spoke on his time in the States and the future of his committee during a podcast with Express.

When asked about the impact he would liked to have made during the four and a bit years in post as President, he said making headway with key work accommodation is top of the list.

"I hope we will have the Hospital Modernisation Project well underway by the time I leave, it would [also] be really great if we can get some key worker accommodation.

One of our key factors is being able to employ people from overseas to come and work here. It is a difficult market for them to find accommodation. We have the John Henry Court, which is full, and it's been full for years, we needed another one of those to come online two years ago.

“We are struggling with the legacy of previous committees, not necessarily health committees, but those who've got responsibility for key worker housing."

He said he does have some sympathy as “none of us” could’ve predicted Brexit, covid or the war in Ukraine – all of which has added to staff pressures.

“But we really do need some further accommodation avenues for key workers. So, I would like to see that well underway before I put up my political hat.

There is very little alternative. These are things that must be progressed. And my job really over the next two years is to convince my fellow politicians that this is where they need to invest their time and their money for the benefit of Islanders.
