Library Story Tower reaches new heights

Sunday 20 September 2020

A new chapter has begun for storytelling at the Guille-Alles Library following a full refurbishment of the Story Tower to make it more accessible to children.

The Tower, a ‘Widow’s Walk’ at the very peak of the historic building, has had a complete overhaul, improving the look and feel of the space and allowing more natural light.

Cornelia James, Children and Young People’s Services Manager, felt that an update to the space was necessary.

“The Story Tower has always been an exciting corner of the library building, but previously it wasn’t the most practical space,” she said. “This refurbishment will allow us to integrate it more fully as a public area of the building, so that children can experience lots more storytelling sessions in a really exciting and atmospheric environment.”

The work follows the success of the Children’s Library Project, which saw that area completely rejuvenated back in 2018. After that, visits to the library rose by 8% in 2019, and loans saw a 20% increase.

More projects are planned, as part of an ongoing effort to gradually redevelop the whole library.

The Story Tower is the second major involvement the Sarah Groves Foundation has had with the library. Vic Groves, a member of the Foundation, said the trustees were unanimous in their support for the development.

“Our mission statement is ‘Enhancing Young Lives,’ and if the Story Tower is anywhere near as successful as the Children’s Library has been, very many young lives will be enhanced as a result.”

The Story Tower is also available for adult events such as guided meditations and small yoga classes. Anyone interested in booking the space can contact the Library on 720392, or email ga@library.gg.
