Leale's Yard deadline looms

Wednesday 25 March 2020

A decision could be made on the next stage of the planning process for the future redevelopment of Leale's Yard within weeks as the public consultation on the current proposals is due to close on Friday.

At the moment the proposals, which are on display in the former Smilers shop on Southside of the Bridge, suggest a mixture of uses, including community activities, retail and housing.

The current proposals include a civic square; as a focus of community, retail and workplace opportunies, a public 'green space', town houses and mews houses, and new car parking spaces to take the pressure off the row of spaces in front of the Bridge shops.

There're also suggestions to change some of the pedestrian and vehicular access to the Bridge.

While there is some opposition to the plans, including from some of the shop owners currently operating on the Bridge who don't want to lose the parking outside their businesses, the proposals have found some public support.

The plans will be tweaked based on feedback given during this consultation stage, which has been open since early February, before being presented as a Draft Development Framework.

That will then go out to consultation before a final decision is made on what direction the redevelopment should take before any tenders are invited to do the work.

The current Framework can be viewed online at gov.gg/developmentframeworks as well as being on display at the former Smilers unit on Southside, until Friday 27 March.

Any feedback on the Draft Development Framework should be sent to planning@gov.gg or to the Planning Service at Sir Charles Frossard House, St Peter Port, GY1 1FH by 27 March 2020.
