Leale's Yard plans on display today

Saturday 29 February 2020

With plans progressing for the future redevelopment of Leale's Yard, the latest designs are on display today so anyone who wants to can see them can.

The Salvation Army Community Centre & Cafe on Nocq Road, near Leale's Yard itself, will have the plans on display between 10:00 and 15:00 today.

The draft development framework that's been put together for the 30.71 verges derelict site, which is bounded by the Bridge, Nocq Road, and Lowlands Road, includes plans for residential, retail and social spaces.

It would include public car parking spaces, so the area in front of the shops on the Bridge itself could be pedestrianised. The framework could also see changes to the traffic management on the Bridge at the pedestrian crossing and the roundabouts.

The Development Framework isn't a planning application itself, but will give guidance to anyone wanting to apply to build there in the future if it is approved.

More public feedback is needed though before the plans can progress any further.

After years of inaction, including when planning permission was given but was allowed to lapse before work started, it is hoped this could finally see the area behind the Bridge revitalised.

There will be representatives from the Project Team at the Salvation Army Community Centre & Cafe today, along with planning professionals from the States of Guernsey who can discuss the draft framework with anyone who drops in.

The Project Team includes the States' Planning Services and Tibbalds, consultants from the UK, who will also be there to answer questions.

There will be further feedback sessions held with other stakeholders including the Youth Commission and States Members.

The draft framework was published on 17 February, and is on display at the former Smilers shop on Southside of the Bridge for six weeks, until 17 March, so the public can see it. It is also available online at gov.gg/developmentframeworks.

Feedback on the draft development framework should be sent to planning@gov.gg or to the Planning Service, Sir Charles Frossard House, St Peter Port, GY1 1FH by 27 March 2020.
