More Jubilee events announced

A full programme of events has been announced for this summer for the Bailiwick to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 70 years as monarch.

Events include islanders being invited to design a Platinum Jubilee flag, legacy projects in each parish, entertainment along the Town seafront and a party at Government House.

The Bailiwick will have a four-day bank holiday from 2 June until 6 June and will generally align events and legacy projects with the programme of official events in the UK.

As part of the celebrations, the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture is launching a competition for islanders to design a unique Guernsey Platinum Jubilee flag. The winning flag will be sent to Her Majesty The Queen personally on behalf of the island. 

Individuals, schools and community groups are all invited design a flag. The deadline for submissions is 11 March.

Other events announced for the extended bank holiday weekend include the lighting of a Jubilee beacon at Castle Cornet as part of an effort to illuminate multiple major locations across the British Isles on the same day – Thursday 2 June. 

On Saturday 4 June, a ‘Platinum Party’ at Government House will offer families a fun afternoon before the screening of an evening concert at Buckingham Palace.

The concert will feature some of the world’s best entertainers and will be be shown live on a big screen in the grounds of Government House, supported by local brass bands and special guests.

Arts Sunday’s Platinum Jubilee celebration - organised by Guernsey Arts – will feature stalls, music and entertainment on along the seafront in Town on Sunday 5 June from 10:00 until 16:00.

Legacy projects will include Jubilee planting displays with each parish invited to plant a display in a prominent position to win a Platinum Jubilee Floral Guernsey discretionary award. This is in conjunction with the Floral Guernsey Community Competition.

Pictured: Government House, the residence of the Lt. Governor, will host an afternoon lawn party and a live evening screening of the Buckingham Palace Jubilee concert. 

The mast at the Weighbridge roundabout will fly the winning Platinum Jubilee flag and be decorated in Jubilee bunting. The roundabout will also host a Platinum Jubilee planting display.

Schools in the Bailiwick will benefit from the Queen's Green Canopy tree planting ‘a tree for every class’ project and the Committee will give every child in full-time education a Jubilee commemorative 50p coin in a presentation pack.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, a member of the Committee, said: “We have been developing plans so that the Guernsey community can enjoy the occasion, including the exciting launch of our competition today to design the island’s Platinum Jubilee flag.

“We hope we’ll receive lots of creative designs and look forward to announcing the winner, which will then be sent to Her Majesty as a tribute from the island.”
