"We stand with you"

Wednesday 14 December 2022

Further practical and moral support has been offered to Jersey as the island continues to reel from the two tragedies which have hit its community over the past few days.

Guernsey's most senior politician opened today's States meeting with a message to our sister island.

Deputy Peter Ferbrache said he was speaking on behalf of everyone in the Bailiwick when he said our thoughts are with our Channel Island neighbours during this unthinkably sad time.

"While we enjoy a healthy and friendly sporting rivalry with Jersey, we stand very much as one Channel Islands community during times of pain and hardship," he said.

"The two tragedies in Jersey over the last week have been felt across the islands and on behalf of the States of Guernsey and all islanders I'd like to express our deep sorrow for all those in our sister isle who have been affected.

"Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the fishermen missing following the collision at sea on Thursday. Such a tragedy in itself would have been enough to rock any community to its core but for it to be followed by Saturday's devastating explosion is almost unthinkable."

Deputy Ferbrache went on to confirm practical help is available to Jersey as well as our moral support.

"The thoughts of all Guernsey people are with Jersey at this very sad time," he continued.

"We're thinking particularly of those who have lost loved ones, those who are injured and the emergency services working so well and so tirelessly to help the community."

He said that his offer of practical help to Jersey which was extended on Saturday during the immediate aftermath of the devastating explosion will stand "today, tomorrow, the coming weeks and for as long as necessary".

He also confirmed that Guernsey Police officers have travelled over to Jersey to help colleagues there. The island's ambulance service also offered its practical support.

During the search for the missing three fishermen volunteers on Guernsey's lifeboat and the Guernsey based Air Search plane were quick to respond to calls for help.

Recovery work is ongoing in the search for victims of both the maritime collision and the explosion.

Michael Michieli and his two crewmen, Larry Simyunn and Jervis Ramirez Baligat, were last seen setting to sea in the early hours of last Thursday morning. Their boat - L'ecume II - lies on the seabed off the coast at St Ouen. Two bodies were recovered from the area yesterday and enquiries are continuing today.

Nine victims of the Pier Road blast have now been named. Seven of them have been confirmed dead as the recovery operation at the site of their former homes at Haut du Mont continues.

Detective Superintendent Alison Fossey, who is the Head of Crime for the States of Jersey Police, will be the senior officer leading the investigation into what happened there.

In a separate update, Andium Homes, who own the flats, confirmed there was a "redundant" Island Energy supply at Haut du Mont but, "...no gas was being consumed on site either by us or our residents. In September, we instructed Island Energy to disconnect that redundant supply from their mains network, off site."

Islands Energy later added: “We can confirm that, in line with Andium’s statement, there was a redundant Island Energy supply at Haut du Mont but there was no gas being consumed by either Andium or their residents.

“Outside of this, we are unable to comment on any details regarding works carried out on the property last week as this is part of an investigation and, as such, it would be inappropriate to discuss any information at this time.”
