Islands hoping to renew Siam Cup rivalry this summer

Tuesday 02 February 2021

Guernsey and Jersey's rugby sides are hoping to make up for lost time later this year after they agreed to a set of Siam Cup fixtures starting in August.

The Guernsey Raiders and the Jersey Reds have jointly announced they have agreed a format of Siam Cup fixtures for 2021/22 with the aim of “catching up” on the Centenary match, which had to be abandoned last year due to the pandemic.

The rescheduled Centenary Siam Cup will be held in Guernsey on 28 August 2021, which will lead into the 2021/22 season when Siam contests will take place for all teams including Men’s, Ladies, 2nds and Vets.

"After such an unsettling time over the past year, it is fantastic for our players, coaches, members, volunteers and sponsors to have a date to look forward to in August," said Raiders Joint Chair Andrea Harris.

"The Siam Cup has always been a hard-fought and keenly contested affair across all matches. We are excited to host the postponed Centenary match in front of what we expect to be a packed Garenne Stand at Footes Lane and put on a show for our spectators.”

Once the 2021/22 season fixtures are released, it is expected that the two islands will agree dates for two further Siam Cup fixtures to be played in May 2022, with each club hosting one match in either island.

Jersey Reds Chairman Mark Morgan said: “I am delighted our two clubs have been able to line-up three spectacles for the coming season. Not only will this be great for both sets of supporters, but it will also provide much-needed revenues after both clubs have been hit by the withdrawal of funding from the RFU.”
