Islanders vote remain - survey

Friday 11 October 2019

The majority of respondents to a survey on people's views on Brexit would prefer the UK to remain part of the EU.

1,610 Guernsey residents responded to a survey by Island Global Research looking into the public's views on Brexit.

60% said that if there was a referendum now - and they were able to vote - they would vote for the UK to remain in the EU.

There was a strong correlation between age and the way people felt about Brexit.

More than 70% of respondents under the age of 34 wanted the UK to remain in the EU.

At the other end of the age range, only 25% of over-75s believed it was a good idea to remain in the EU.

The survey also sought people's opinions on a no-deal Brexit, with the current deadline of 31st October now just three weeks away.

"50% think Brexit will have a negative out very negative impact on Guernsey if Britain were to leave the EU without a deal," said the survey team.

"When compared with a recent UK survey, people living in Guernsey are similarly worried as people in the UK about medicine shortage, increased food prices and food shortages. But they are more worried than those living in the UK about delays to imports/exports from the EU, citizens losing benefits in the EU and delays travelling to/from the EU."
