Interim Principals appointed

Thursday 04 June 2020

Two Interim Principals have been appointed to lead Les Beaucamps and St Sampson's High schools while the 'pause and review' of secondary education is carried out.

Martin Haimes will remain in post at Les Beaucamps, having already been Acting Principal there for two years.

Vicky Godley will move from La Mare de Carteret High, to lead St Sampson’s from the start of the next academic year in September - meaning there is now a vacancy at La Mare which is being advertised, to find an Interim Principal for that site, to also start in September.

The Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre will continue to be led by Kieran James as it has been for the past two academic years, with all four States’ run secondary schools operating as a single organisation under the overall leadership of Executive Head Teacher Liz Coffey, while the wider review of secondary education is carried out.

Ms Coffey has already worked with both the new Interim Principals and said all four will continue to work together, along with the new Head at La Mare de Carteret High School when they are appointed.

"Having worked closely with Martin and Vicky, I am very pleased that we have been able to offer these opportunities. I have every confidence in their experience and leadership to secure improvements, during the ongoing review of secondary education," she said.

Ms Godley has been head of La Mare for nine years, which she said she has really enjoyed.

"I have absolutely loved my time at La Mare de Carteret High. As a school community we have achieved so much and I am grateful for all the support I have had from colleagues, students and parents. The time is right time to take on a new challenge and I am excited about this opportunity. I have learnt so much while leading La Mare and I am looking forward to putting all my efforts into making a positive contribution at St Sampson’s."

Mr Haimes has been Acting Principal at Les Beaucamps for two years, and was previously an assistant principal at the Guernsey Grammar School. He said:

"As Acting Headteacher, the last two years have been a highlight of my career and I am very happy that I’ll be able to continue working with this fantastic group of staff, students and parents. The school community of Les Beaucamps is wonderful and I am delighted to have been appointed Interim Principal."

The decision to appoint new Interim Principals came after the States backed a 'pause and review' of the transformation of secondary education.

That is likely to take until at least 2022, with each of the four States run secondary schools currently in operation staying open for now, working together as a federated model.

Different models of secondary education will be considered before the States are asked to again vote on the method of secondary education they want for the island.

Deputy Matt Fallaize, President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said all of the Principals will be actively involved in the leadership team.

"In the original timeline for establishing the two 11-18 colleges, Vicky was going to oversee La Mare de Carteret and Les Beaucamps as those schools were brought together and Kieran was going to oversee St Sampson’s and Grammar as those schools were brought together. Obviously we had to make some changes to the leadership plans once the States directed the “pause and review” of secondary education. We are putting in place an interim leadership team for the next couple of years before the transition can begin to whatever future model of secondary education the current or next States put in place.

"Vicky has done an outstanding job at La Mare de Carteret. We are delighted that she is taking on the new challenge of leading St Sampson’s for the next couple of years. Vicky will continue to lead La Mare de Carteret until the end of this academic year and we are now in the process of recruiting her successor with a view to announcing an appointment in good time before the summer holidays. At Les Beaucamps, Martin has provided stable leadership while continuing to develop the School. He was the clear choice to continue as its leader and we are very pleased he will serve as Interim Principal there for the next couple of years."
