Hospital isolation plans confirmed

Wednesday 03 June 2020

Anyone going to hospital in Southampton for 'inpatient treatment' will have to self isolate for 14-days before travelling to the UK, and then again for 14-days when they get back.

The news has been confirmed by Guernsey's Committee for Health and Social Care following discussions with University Hospital Southampton.

Anyone who has an in-patient appointment scheduled will be contacted by UHS to tell them about the self-isolation requirement.

Anyone who is due to be admitted to UHS within the next two weeks, and who hasn't been self-isolating, may have their appointment postponed.

For patients travelling to UHS for outpatient appointments, they do not need to self-isolate before travelling for treatment but they will need to self-isolate for 14-days when they return to the Bailiwick.

All patients going to the UK for treatment at UHS - either as an in or out-patient - will have to be tested for covid-19 before they go too. The swab will be taken 48-hours before an appointment with the results sent electronically to UHS.

Any emergency patients will also be tested before being transferred to the UK, with those results being ready within an hour in urgent cases.

A spokesperson for HSC said the requirements of UHS are not dissimilar to those placed on Bailiwick patients who need treatment at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and need a general anaesthetic. Those patients will also have to self-isolate for 14-days first to ensure overall patient safety, because anyone who contracts covid-19 during or following a general anaesthetic might otherwise suffer very poor outcomes.

Any one needing treatment at the PEH, without needing a general anaesthetic will not have to self-isolate for 14 days beforehand.

If patients require any further information they should contact the Off-Island Team at the Hospital on tel. 725241 or email hsctag@gov.gg.
