Home residents begin 200km cycling fundraiser

Guernsey Cheshire Home residents are looking to static cycle their way to an accessible outdoor adventure holiday in a new fundraiser.

They hope to travel a combined distance of 200km – just under 125 miles – to raise £25,000 to take at least 12 residents to Exmoor with the Calvert Trust.

Each of them will be peddling as much as they can each day until the fundraising target is met.

Once there, residents will enjoy accessible-for-all activities including rock climbing, zip lining, abseiling, camping, and even horse riding. 

The challenge began on Friday with resident Colin first up to log some miles, racking up four kilometers by the time reporters left. 

They hope to travel away at the end of June but will go in September if funding cannot be secured in time. 

Around £4,000 is needed to pay the deposit to the Trust.

Calvert Trust has three similar sites across the UK, but the Exmoor site was deemed to be the most practical to reach from Guernsey. 

Residents previously holidayed at the site over a decade ago. 

There are several logistical challenges, including transfer to the harbour, ferry tickets, English coach travel, and new passports.

Deputy Home Manager, Lianne Larkin said the Home has seen a younger group of day patients attending between the ages of 20 and 40, but the holiday was “also for people who have never been able to do” outdoor activities before.

On man in his twenties who has multiple sclerosis was “sporty” but can’t do as much anymore, according to Ms Larkin. 

Residents had “loads of ideas for the challenge” but ultimately landed on cycling.

“We focus on ability rather than disability here,” Ms Larkin added.

“All families treasure being able to make memories together and we are no different. A trip to the Calvert Trust would be so special for our residents, especially after spending so much time locked-down and shielding in recent years.”

Guernsey Cheshire Home is dedicated to the care of those with physical disabilities and preserving their independence.

It receives no States funding towards it's operating costs. 

The Home is also looking to launch a corporate cycling fundraiser where businesses would donate a lump sum before completing their own 200km in pairs. 

The Home has a £10 per month corporate sponsorship scheme where supporting businesses will feature on its website.
