Guernsey remembers...

Monday 27 January 2020

Today, Guernsey people will join together to remember victims of the Holocaust and other acts of genocide both in the island and further afield.

A number of local events are taking place to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, beginning with a service at the White Rock memorial, led by the Very Reverend Tim Barker.

The 30 minute memorial will start at midday at the memorial to slave labourers. There will be an introduction to the commemoration before a prayer and the laying of a wreath by the Deputy Bailiff.

The service will then move to the memorial to the Guernsey Eight, where there will be a moment of silence, followed by a prayer of recollection and the laying of a second wreath by the Deputy Bailiff.

The commemoration will come to an end at the memorial to the three Jewish women, where there will be another moment's silence before the mourners' Kaddish, which will be read by a member of the local Jewish community. A third wreath will then be laid by the Deputy Bailiff.

This year, the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture has joined together with the Arts Commission, the College of Further Education and the Guernsey Music Centre to come up with a commemorative performance of music and dance for the memorial event. It will be performed by sixth form students at the Town Church at 13:00, following the service.

Students from the College of FE will present new and original choreography in remembrance and will perform alongside the 'Insieme' string quartet made up of Music Centre students.

The service and performances are open to all, regardless of religious beliefs.
