Herm’s school will be reinstated after a succesful Requete will force Education to roll back its pilot closure.
Deputy David de Lisle’s Requete passed with a majority of 28 votes to nine after an entire day of debate.
While the President of Education, Sport and Culture tried to convince the Assembly that it wouldn’t be appropriate to continue education on the island as it is from a safeguarding point of view, the approach of ESC was roundly criticised for being out of touch with the will of the community.
An increased cost in providing on island education was also highlighted as a reason to continue the pilot, a point which gathered some support from those who thought people were debating with their ‘heart not their head’.
However, support for the community of Herm won out, with many in the Assembly fighting for the unique educational experience those in Herm have enjoyed for decades.
ESC’s compromise agreement in the form of an amendment was also voted down, as was a ‘lifeboat’ thrown by Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, who lodged an amendment to stop the trial but direct ESC to investigate alternative versions of education in Herm instead.
ESC will now have to reinstate the provision of education in Herm, after the trial closure begun on Wednesday.
