Endurance challenge brings businesses together

Thursday 27 June 2019

The Hel(l)vetia Challenge returns for a third time today, with teams competing while raising money for local good causes.

The event, which is again co-sponsored by Credit Suisse and Babbé , is taking place in the area near Credit Suisse's Guernsey HQ at the South Esplanade, with roads closed including the Val des Terres from midday.

Teams from local businesses will be completing the triathlon-inspired route for charity, which this year includes the Guernsey and Alderney Youth Commission.

The participants will be completing between one and ten laps, which includes a 600-metre swim starting from the ice-cream van slipway, cycling up and down the Val Des Terres and running from the slipway to the Aquarium towards Castle Cornet and finishing back at the slipway.

Those teams will have chosen to either share a lap, or laps, in any way they wanted to with one lap estimated to take them between 25 and 50 minutes to complete, depending on their ability and level of fitness.

The main beneficiary of this year's challenge will be the Guernsey and Alderney Youth Commission.

Charlie Cox, Chief Executive Officer at GYC, said: “The Youth Commission is honoured to be Credit Suisse’s chosen charity for 2019. We are thrilled that the money raised will be used to directly impact the lives of children and young people in the Bailiwick, helping them to be ambitious in reaching their full potential. Several members of our staff will be partaking in the incredible Hel(l)vetia Challenge, as well as others marshalling, supporting and encouraging all participants around the course. We are delighted to be working so closely with the amazing Credit Suisse team and look forward to the rest of the year.”

Paul Annegarn, Credit Suisse CEO and Guernsey Branch Manager, said: “We are delighted to co-sponsor the third edition of the Hel(l)vetia Challenge with Babbe. We are also working with Try-a-Tri on the logistics of the event as it grows bigger each year. We’re expecting hundreds of participants to take part in this year’s race and would welcome spectators to come down and show their support. We hope to raise as much money as possible for our charity of the year, the Guernsey Youth Commission.”

Andrew Laws, the Managing Partner at Babbe, said: “Babbé is proud to once again co-sponsor the Hel(l)vita Challenge with Credit Suisse. We are excited to continue to be part of this fantastic event that promotes inclusivity, team spirit and friendly competition. A highlight of the annual corporate events calendar, it importantly raises significant funds for local charities and good causes. Our chosen charity, the Youth Commission, is inspirational in its work and dedication to addressing the issues facing our young people and we look forward to supporting them.”

The event takes place between 12:00 and 18:00 today, Thursday 27 June, in central St Peter Port.

There will be 30 volunteer marshals on hand to ensure that the day goes smoothly.
