Heather Reed elected as island’s newest Jurat

Thursday 25 March 2021

A former Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology beat three other candidates to secure “the greatest honour Guernsey can bestow on a member of the community”.

Two rounds of voting were needed to establish a clear winner when Guernsey's electoral college cast their votes in the States yesterday. After an inconclusive first round, Miss Reed received 49 of the available 95 votes, one more than the 50% required to win.

She will be sworn in as a Jurat on Wednesday 7 April.

Miss Reed moved to Guernsey in 1998 as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology until her retirement in 2017. Her work encompassed care and support for victims of domestic and child abuse in Guernsey.

For several years she served as a member of the Board of Directors of Guernsey’s Women’s Refuge. She is currently a Member of the CareWatch Panel, a volunteer for Health Connections and training to serve on the Child, Youth and Community Tribunal, together with her charity work.

Being elected as a Jurat is, in the words of Bailiff Richard McMahon, “the greatest honour Guernsey can bestow on a member of the community”.

Miss Reed was proposed by Deputy Heidi Soulsby and seconded by Deputy Peter Roffey. The other candidates were: Anne Setters (proposed by Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, seconded by Deputy Steve Falla); Clare Burton (Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, Deputy Mark Helyar); and Mark Dorey (Deputy Peter Ferbrache, Deputy Al Brouard).

In the first round of voting the results were: Miss Reed 37, Mrs Setters 26, Mrs Burton 18, Mr Dorey 13 and there was one spoiled paper. Mr Dorey was eliminated for the second round of voting. The second round results were: Miss Reed 49, Mrs Setters 27, Mrs Burton 17 and two blank papers.
