The parking spaces which are now part of the freight storage and car check in areas were transferred across in 2012, that position was extended in 2015 and now Guernsey Harbours have asked to keep that going again.

While Guernsey Harbours controls the land, it needs planning permission for what is effectively an ongoing change of use.

Commercial Manager – Ports Doug Wright said they've done that to enable Guernsey Harbours to keep using the 'critical' area 

“Guernsey Harbours had been in discussion with the Development and Planning Authority prior to February 2019 in order to secure the continued use of the North Beach car check in area," he said.

"Guernsey Harbours has not returned the land in question on the North Beach to public parking, as it is an operationally critical part of St Peter Port Harbour.

"The site is a critical part of island infrastructure that enables passenger and freight vehicle movements by ro-ro ferry. Guernsey Harbours handles 99% per cent of all goods coming in and out of the island.

"The area is in the Harbour Action Area in the Island Development Plan and future international maritime security codes will govern the long term future of the site.”
