Harbour Carnival: What to expect and when

Friday 23 August 2024

The iconic Harbour Carnival will be returning to the St Peter Port seafront this year, celebrating the island's two greatest assets – town and the ocean - while raising money for charity.

The event is organised every year by the Guernsey Round Table, a fundraising organisation that has been involved for decades. This year money is being raised for Channel Islands Air Search.

Here’s your official guide to the day:

The Duck Race - Victoria Marina

The start of the Big Duck race is a spectacle in itself as 50 giant bath ducks are launched between the pier heads on the incoming tide and race to see who can get the furthest.

Look out for: Amazing decorated ducks and the odd Round Table member falling foul of the incoming tide and getting very wet.

Starts: 18:30.

Ladies Dinghy Race - Victoria Marina

Teams of ladies compete for a coveted prize by paddling a dinghy containing four of their team across the mouth of the marina, there they pick up two additional competitors and return to the starting point.

The twist with this event is that no oars are permitted and all participants must remain in the boat, no easy feat when you've 6 people frantically paddling a small inflatable dingy.

Look out for: Fancy dress.

Starts: 19:00.

Tug of war - Victoria Marina (Albert Pier side)

Two teams participate in this traditional event, with the twist that they are side by side, not opposing one another. The rope goes across the mouth of the harbour with a pulley on the other side.

The losing team is the one that ends the bout by falling into the harbour.

Look out for: Some very wet builders and scaffolders.

Starts: 20:00.

(CANCELLED) Man-Powered Flight - Victoria Marina

Unfortunately the organisers have had to cancel this spectacle due to several unavoidable technical issues.

Kids Zone - Albert Pier

Get the kids to burn off all that energy on the bouncy castles and inflatable slides.

Fireworks - Castle Emplacement

Stick around and enjoy the popular fireworks display to finish the event off.

Starts: 22:00.

Food and Drink

Pick from a wide selection of food and drink stands. Fear not, no one goes hungry at Harbour Carnival.
