Harbour bait digging banned

From next year, bait digging in St Peter Port Harbour will be banned.

Guernsey Harbours have decided to take action, following an internal review by the Port Operations team and other stakeholders.

Any current digging arrangements will come to an end on 31 December this year, and no new applications will be accepted.

"Currently, bait digging in St Peter Port Harbour can only be carried out at certain low tides, and areas of the harbour with permission," said Head of Port Operations, Jerome Davis. "We believe digging for bait at St Peter Port Harbour is no longer appropriate and there are numerous other areas and sites around the island more suited to the purpose."

For safety reasons, including the commercial and hydrocarbon berths that dry out at low tide, bait digging is already banned at St Sampson's Harbour.
