Happy birthday Millie!

Thursday 23 April 2020

Musician, keen gardener and Guernsey girl Mille Foss is celebrating her 100th birthday today.

She was born in the island on St George's Day in 1920, in the same house she has lived in for the past century.

As a child, she would walk from her home in Route Militaire to Vale Primary School, and later went to the Girls Intermediate for her secondary education.

Having been taught to play the piano by her mother, Millie went on to teach numerous musical protégés up until her retirement at 87-years-old.

"She has an amazing memory and is still in contact with many of her old pupils and remembers teaching Heather Watson," said family member Keith Austin.

"She loved gardening and travelling and driving on the continent and still keeps in contact with friends she made in Australia and Switzerland.

"Her real passion was driving and she drove for 76 years, only stopping (under protest) when her sight deteriorated.

"She still loves going out with friends for a coffee and will no doubt carry on when we get back to normal."

Millie has a good local support group with help from Keith and Val, their children Andre and Chantal, and their grandson Ryan, along with many friends. She also has support from her nephews Ken and Denis who both live in England with their families.

Although birthday celebrations will be slightly different this year, Millie is looking forward to receiving her greeting from Her Majesty The Queen.

She also received a special visit from the boys in blue!
