New Patrons of GROW redevelopment project

Guernsey’s Rural Occupation Workshop had plans approved for its redevelopment project late last year and the £2.5 million project will now be supported by a high-profile couple.

The ageing vinery site is being transformed into a training facility for people with learning disabilities.

GROW will in time be able to offer a suite of new training opportunities to help improve personal employment opportunities.

Funds are currently being raised to start the project, and GROW’s Chairman hopes new Patrons Guy and Julia Hands will encourage more people to pledge their support.

“We aim to raise over half that sum [£2.5m] by October,” said Advocate Mark Dunster. “We are delighted that Guy and Julia are endorsing our aims with their patronage. Their involvement demonstrates a level of confidence in what we’re doing.”

GROW has been in operation for 36 years and has 50 trainees on site known as ‘crew’. These crew learn a number of skills primarily in horticulture. The new site will allow for a broader range of developmental activities.

“What particularly appeals to us is that GROW offers opportunities not available elsewhere in the island,” said Mrs Hands.

“The trainees benefit not only from learning employable skills, but also communication and other life skills.”

“We hope that other islanders will join us in helping GROW fulfil its potential,” concluded Mrs Hands.
