Guernsey's Welsh voices to entertain the Welsh!

Monday 23 January 2023

The Guernsey Welsh Male Voice Choir (GWMVC) has been invited to join others in entertaining spectators ahead of the Wales v England Six Nations Match, in Cardiff, next month.

The members of the GWMVC will make up part of a 120 strong male voice ensemble which will be singing the national anthems among other songs ahead of the international game at the Principality Stadium on Saturday 25 February.

The GWMVC say they are particularly delighted to have been asked to sing at this game after the disappointment they experienced three years ago.

The choir had travelled to Wales in March 2020 only for the game to be cancelled at the eleventh hour due to the growing covid outbreak affecting the UK at the time.

To make the occasion even more special for the GWMVC, they will be one of only four choirs from outside of Wales to have been invited to sing at the stadium. They said they feel "so privileged to be offered this opportunity given the popularity of the Wales v England game".

The choir has been working hard under the direction of their Musical Director, Fiona Le Tissier, who is helping them learn the repertoire chosen by Haydn James, who is responsible for selecting and organising the choirs for the respective Welsh home games in conjunction with the WRU. Mr James has conducted every performance over the last 20 years since the Principality Stadium was first opened.

The setlist will include Welsh crowd favourites 'Cwm Rhondda' (Bread of Heaven) and 'Delilah'.

Ahead of the visit to Wales, which may be featured in the television coverage during the build up to the match, the GWMVC will be performing the full repertoire at a concert they have called 'Countdown to Cardiff'.

The local concert is being held at St Saviour’s Church at 14:30 on Saturday 11 February.
