Guernsey Powerboat Association to host World Championship event

Wednesday 13 March 2019

The Guernsey Powerboat Association has confirmed it will once again be hosting a prestigious event bringing visiting teams to the island.

Competitors from around the world will head to the island for Round 2 of the UKOPRA race series, which is now recognised as a World Championship.

It is one of three events, with the first being held in Poole Bay and the third in Cowes in the Isle of Wight.

Boats will arrive in Guernsey on 5 July and will be on display in the Victoria Marina, before setting out on races from 09:45 the following morning. The Offshore class will cover approximately 120nm, while Class 3 participants will compete over a 70nm course through the narrow Gouliot Passage. The race will finish with a prize-giving presentation at the Castle Emplacement followed by a gala awards dinner.

The event will draw to a close on 7 July with a powerboat parade stretching along the seafront from the Castle Emplacement to North Beach carpark and back.

This will bring back memories for many people of previous parades during what was Guernsey Powerboat Week.

The GPA has staged many similar events over the last few years, with a resurgent interest in the sport locally and with growing visitor numbers coming back to compete. Including the Honda Racing in 2004 and 2005, the Class 3C National Races in 2006 and 2007, the Class 3C World Championships in 2008 and the 3A and 3B World Championships in 2014.

A Facebook event page has been set up to keep supporters and entrants up to date with the action.
