Schools take on 'Eco Challenge'

Friday 25 October 2019

Local schoolchildren are being encouraged to come up with projects to make their school more sustainable.

Guernsey Electricity and Guernsey Post have joined together to launch the 'Bailiwick School Eco Challenge' which aims to improve the island's environmental sustainability.

It follows on from the utilities' installation of the largest solar array in the Channel Islands at Envoy House.

"Environmental sustainability is a major focus for us as Guernsey Electricity," said Guernsey Electricity PR & Communications Lead, Alice Gill. "We're keen to support the efforts of local businesses and schools and we're really excited to see the creative ideas that the pupils come up with."

Working in teams of two, three or four, the children will come up with either one major project or a few smaller projects that improve their school's environmental stance. There will be three team categories; six to eight-year-olds, nine to 12-year-olds and 13 to 16-year-olds.

All teams will be asked to put forward creative ideas, plans of action and drawings or models. The entries will be shortlisted and judged by a panel which will visit the schools, giving the teams an opportunity to present their ideas.

"As a business we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment, from introducing our electric fleet of postal vans to the new solar array at our headquarters," added Head of Corporate Engagement at Guernsey Post, Dawn Gallienne.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with Guernsey Electricity on this great initiative. We can't wait to see the children present their ideas."

The winning team from each category will be awarded £1,000 towards the implementation of their eco-friendly initiative.

Winners will be announced at the end of November.
