Guernsey cheese enjoyed by Parliament

Guernsey politicians have represented the island on matters such as beneficial ownership and Brexit at the Houses of Parliament for the latest Channel Islands All Party Parliamentary Group meeting.

Representatives from Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Jersey were in Westminster last week to promote a better understanding of the issues facing the Channel Islands and to further develop relations with the UK.

There was a little taste of Guernsey on offer as well, with Guernsey Dairy supplying three different types of local cheese which were enjoyed by guests at the reception afterwards.

Policy & Resources Vice-President Lyndon Trott was in London along with with P&R colleague Jonathan Le Tocq and Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen.

“I was pleased to attend the CIAPPG’s meeting and reception to update the Group on a number of recent developments in Guernsey," said Deputy Trott. "For a change, the agenda was not dominated by Brexit although, of course, it was still discussed.

“Following the joint announcement by Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man last week, CIAPPG members and reception guests were interested to learn more about the islands’ approach to registers of beneficial ownership.  Members were already alert to the potential constitutional threat posed by an amendment to the Financial Services (Implementation of Legislation) Bill – that Bill has yet to be rescheduled for debate in the House of Commons.

“My colleagues and I found it helpful to develop and renew relationships with friends and acquaintances from across the political spectrum in the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The CIAPPG meetings are one part of our continuing engagement with UK parliamentarians on matters of importance to Guernsey.”

There is one further CIAPPG meeting scheduled for this year.
