Japanese calligraphy, known as "Shodo", is one of the oldest surviving traditional Japanese art forms.
In this introductory session, you will learn the origins of Kanji (Chinese characters) and how they are used in Japanese writing, experience and use the essential traditional tools of Shodo, practise the technique for forming individual brush strokes and create your own handcrafted work.
All required course materials are provided for use during the session. These are of a high quality and have been imported directly from specialist suppliers in Japan.

It’s that time of the year again…Guernsey Arts is proud to present the annual Student Exhibition 2024!
Taking place in the George Crossan Gallery from 6 to 27 September, this show showcases the exceptional creative talent that is cultivated by our local education institutes - right here, on Island.
The featured artworks that you will see on display have been selected and curated by the Guernsey Arts team. We have carefully selected works from across the Island that demonstrate creativity, high technical ability and individuality.
Within the show, you'll find thought-provoking artworks from final year students of Elizabeth College, the Ladies College, Les Varendes High School & Sixth Form Centre, The Guernsey Institute and Blanchelande College.
We would like to thank all of the teaching staff for the ongoing support we receive in hosting this exhibition. We also thank this year's cohort of students for their drive and passion in pursuing their creative pathways.
Admission is free and the gallery opening hours are 10am - 4pm.
