Grants created for Alderney youth activities

Sunday 02 August 2020

A new grant scheme has been developed in Alderney, with a view to creating activities which discourage young people from taking up drugs or alcohol.

The Alderney Inspire Fund, developed by the Youth Commission and Health Improvement Commission, will be available for a wide range of activities, including after-school, weekend and holiday events.

Anything, including musical, artistic, sporting or environmental activities, will be considered by the scheme, including one-off or regular events.

“We are grateful to the Health Improvement Commission for supporting this new grant giving scheme which aims to empower the Alderney community to design their own projects and interventions to further support young people in their community,” said Aaron Davies, Service Lead for the Youth Commission.

The Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney is an independent local charity responsible for the delivery of youth work in the Bailiwick. A range of services, including mental health support, youth clubs and educational guidance are offered by the Commission.

“The Health Improvement Commission is delighted to be working in partnership with the Youth Commission,” said Andrea Nightingale, Substance Abuse Lead. “Having visited the Alderney Youth Club and spoken with the young people we found out what they were interested in, what inspired them and what their aspirations were,”

“We wanted to give them the opportunity to own this scheme and try out new activities,”

“With the Youth Worker living locally the scheme can be promoted and organised within the Community and hopefully some of the initiatives and activities may become sustainable.”
