Garden waste site could open for longer in summer

Sunday 09 June 2024

Guernsey Waste want to extend the weekend opening hours of the new green waste disposal site.

The States company has submitted a planning application to alter a planning condition which restricts its public use on weekends, saying “this restriction results in the loss of a quarter of the potential hours of opening at weekends, when the site is at its busiest”.

Planning has restricted the public use of the site to 08:00 and 18:00 from Monday to Friday, while it's only open for drop-offs until 16:00 on weekends and public holidays.

But the need for garden waste to be cleared each day means the site at Chouet doesn’t open its gates to the public until 10:00 each day.

“It is now proposed to operate the site for slightly longer hours during the summer and a reduced number of days during the winter, with the proposed opening hours changing in line with British Summer Time,” Rob Roussel, Senior Technical Advisor at Guernsey Waste said.

The site would be open until 18:00 on weekends and public holidays if permission is granted.

It comes off the back of a review into the efficiencies of the site and identifying times of peak use across the week.

Guernsey Waste are also seeking some minor design changes to the site based on this review, such as repositioning security fencing to link up with Mont Cuet with concerns raised over future shared use with the future Ronez quarry on the headland.
